T
he building blocks of a PR campaign

1. The “News Release.” A “news release” is also sometimes known as a “press release.” They’re basically the same. The typical news release ranges from 200 to 700 words and highlights a specific accomplishment about a business. Topics commonly found in news releases include:

• Announcing new products and services
• Announcing the hiring or promotion of key personnel
• Announcing new client wins
• Announcing awards won
• New professional affiliations
• Staff training
• Community or charitable involvement
• Speaking engagements
• Seminars or industry events attended
• Announcing company anniversary
• Announcing increases in sales

2. The “guest” article. You’re a mortgage broker. A local business publication is looking for information on how low the rates will drop and how long they will be there. What would it do for your business if your name and picture appear in the next month’s edition of this newspaper, offering advice to people seeking to refinance? Or, you’re an architect with considerable expertise in school design. A national educational publication agrees to print a column with your name that talks about the new trends in environmentally friendly schools. You get the idea. You have knowledge and expertise to share but aren’t quite sure how to go about it. A PR campaign will identify where the opportunities exist and match you with those opportunities. Worried about what to say when you land this opportunity? Your PR firm will work with you, interview you, and either write it with you or write it for you.

3. The media interview. Your family business has survived three generations and is still going strong. Or your firm has designed a new mousetrap. Or your environmental firm was just chosen to restore some fragile wetlands. Or maybe you’ve taken an idea from concept to reality in three short years. Media sources are always looking to interview and profile interesting businesses.
